The Unsound Festival livestream in October 2020 was arguably the most immersive experience I've ever had, as a lone audience receiving celestial sound from headphones in a zoom meeting
Conceived by Nicolás Jaar, "Weavings" is a durational improvisation structured in the manner of a long fabric of sound. Artists include Aho Ssan, Ka Baird, Angel Bat Dawid, Ellen Fullman, Dirar Kalash, Księżyc, Laraaji, Jaar himself, Resina, Paweł Szamburski, Juliana Huxtable, Rolando Hernández Guzmán, and Wukir Suryadi and Rully Shabara of Senyawa.
The work was recorded in one sitting without a break on 30th November, for the Unsound 2020 online edition, with performers joining from around the world using Zoom and a high resolution audio plug-in. Jaar had less than 24 hours to mix the work into a whole, then streamed it live from his own computer as the first performance of the festival. Remarkably, the stream felt like an event, referencing Unsound opening shows in the theatres of Krakow.
The "Weavings" album is that mix, unaltered since the broadcast except for subsequent mastering, and the splicing into tracks: a document of the lockdown period in which it was created, yet also timeless.
The drone-like qualities of 'Weavings' are not only a result of its durational form, but also the technology employed, with minute delays between what each musician hears from other performers and what they play in response.
A second part of "Weavings" was performed IRL at Unsound Krakow 2021 on 17th October, and will be released later this year as a companion to this album.
"Weavings" is co-released digitally by the Unsound and Other People labels, with all profit split between the participating artists.

My god, what an absolutely incredible Suite. I'll admit, I've struggled to get into Pharoah Sanders due to diving headfirst into some of his most challenging catalogue and that never worked. This is the perfect place to restart. Floating Points is new for me and I can honestly say I've never heard synthesizer music this lush and organic before. the LSO is just perfect. This is one of those albums that any serious music fan needs in their life. The perfect swan song for the great Pharaoh! 5/5 ClassyMusicSnob
Terry Venemous is releasing new music every 3 weeks this year. His latest EP is sumptuous art pop with a wry sense of detachment.
